Senior Energy Portfolio Analyst

Summary

The Market Analysis and Hedging (MA&H) roles evaluate and execute portfolio strategies (Merchant and Customer Portfolios) and provide market and portfolio analytics for NYPA. #LI-VB1

  1. The Analytics team reviews market and portfolio trends, provides insight to market fundamentals for Portfolio managers, and management of our valuation and risk models.
  2. The Hedging team provides stability to our Portfolios by managing, executing, and recommending hedging strategies to the various NYPA portfolios.
  3. The Customer Portfolio team manages and drives portfolio risk mitigation strategy on behalf our NYPA Customers.

Responsibilities

  • Provide oversight and direction to staff or function in a highly organized and consistent manner.
  • Establish formal policy and procedures for team functions with definitions and standardization of Portfolio. 
  • Manage and drive ad-hoc support to team/projects.

 

Analytics

  • Daily review of Merchant Gross Margin report with Power Portfolio Managers.
  • Collaborate with Power Portfolio Managers to review valuations for annual budget setting process.
  • Prepare and review NYPA’s annual LFRP (Long Range Financial Plan)
  • Support and review monthly MA&H executive summary and quarterly fundamental and market outlook report.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with internal stakeholders.
  • Manage and review list of performance and operational management reporting.

 

Hedging

  • Support the underlying energy transaction risk management program (ETRM) and ensure all hedges are properly recorded in the official deal capture system.
  • Develop recommendations for Senior Management and Marketing on portfolio strategies and specific strategies to address risks.
  • Execution for team’s infrastructure needs (FCM’s, third party brokers, approved counterparties, Bloomberg, ICE, CME/NYMEX) and establish clearly defined guidelines and procedures to ensure compliance.
  • Collaborate with NYPA divisions to ensure that deals fall within corporate guidelines (risk targets, transaction limits, credit limits.)
  • Participate in Energy Risk Management Committee (ERMC) and Portfolio Management discussions
  • Develop and maintain relationships with external and internal stakeholders.

 

Customer Portfolio

  • Understand the contractual terms and conditions of NYPA Customer Contracts, risk appetite, expectations, and market conditions.
  • Serve as a liaison to NYC Governmental customers and communicate hedge and transaction concepts.
  • Develop risk strategies to mitigate the volatility in the energy, capacity, and natural gas markets as well as emission products in keeping with the defined risk tolerances by the customers.
  • Collaborate with GRM and Fuels to manage the daily bidding and operations at the 500MW CCU, SCPP, and AE II power plants.
  • Development of figures to support the May 15th  preliminary cost of service for NYC.
  • Create presentations to communicate performance and recommendations, senior management / customers.
  • Attend ICAP working group meetings, monitor outcomes, and incorporate relative outcomes into NYPA’s bidding strategy.

  • Strong knowledge of NYISO Market and Products (ie capacity, energy, ancillary or fuel markets), Power Plant Operations, and Renewable Market.
  • Ability to stay abreast of current and on-going federal mandates and market news. 
  • Knowledge of corporate strategies and goals, market rules and regulations, risk management protocols, and trade life cycle.
  • Ability to write procedures and policies when applicable.
  • Proficient in MS Office (specifically Excel and PowerPoint) 
  • Proficiency in database programming and querying using SQL, MS Access, VBA, SAS and Oracle preferred.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Economics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Statistics, Business, Engineering, or related field required.
  • Master of Business Administration or equivalent, preferred.
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in an analytical field/management field.
  • Experience in financial derivatives, utility, commodities, or energy industries
  • Strong knowledge of NYPA’s unique generating assets and of the NYISO.

Physical Requirements

  • May require travel to attend conferences and customer meetings. Travel is primarily within New York State.

New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The target salary range for this position is: $114,500 - $140,000. Salary offered will be determined based the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
