Summary

Senior Protection & Controls Engineers play a leading role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and regulatory compliance of NYPA’s transmission and generation systems. As technical authorities in protective relaying, system disturbance analysis, and NERC/NPCC compliance, they oversee advanced engineering work, provide professional guidance, review and approve design packages, and mentor developing staff. Their leadership directly supports NYPA’s grid modernization, asset management, and reliability strategies.

 

Senior P&C Engineers may contribute to flagship NYPA initiatives – such as transmission corridor rebuilds, high‑voltage substation modernization, renewable project protection studies, and statewide grid resiliency enhancements – all vital to delivering clean, dependable energy for New Yorkers.

Responsibilities

  • Lead protection and control engineering functions including relay design, analysis, event review, and compliance oversight.
  • Serve as Subject Matter Expert for P&C engineering across the organization and to senior leadership.
  • Provide engineering design authority, including professional sealing of drawings, calculations, specifications, and documentation.
  • Direct development and implementation of corrective action plans and design standards for P&C systems.
  • Support protection system maintenance/testing programs and provide advanced troubleshooting guidance.
  • Represent NYPA in external committees (NYISO, NPCC, IEEE) and provide expert testimony as required.
  • Lead staff development, workload planning, and engineering best‑practice implementation

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive technical expertise in protective relaying, fault analysis, P&C system architecture, and power system behavior.
  • Strong knowledge of NERC PRC standards and NPCC criteria relevant to P&C compliance.
  • Advanced communication, presentation, and negotiation skills; ability to influence diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to lead multidisciplinary engineering initiatives and resolve highly complex technical issues.
  • Strong analytical and documentation skills including producing research papers, studies, reports, and interrogatories.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent required; Master’s preferred.
  • 8–10+ years of P&C engineering experience with demonstrated leadership roles.
  • New York State Professional Engineer (PE) License required.
  • Experience reviewing and approving discipline‑wide engineering deliverables

Physical Requirements

Approximately 25% travel primarily within NY State.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The estimated salary range for this position is: $146,000 - $182,000. The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
