Senior System Administrator (PI System)

Summary

The Senior System Administrator works within the Application Services Group to administer the Authority’s Software Portfolio by conducting activities to support existing applications and software infrastructure as well as implement new applications and new software infrastructure, with a focus on Aveva PI System (formerly OSISoft).

 

The Senior System Administrator will use technical skills to implement, support, maintain, and improve the software infrastructure, and Project Management skills to realize these objectives in an environment where decisions are guided by policies, procedures, business plan, functional strategies, and business priorities with oversight from IT Management as well as from the IT Advisory committee.

 

The Senior System Administrator position focuses on supporting NYPA’s Asset Health Monitoring Application suite that includes Aveva PI, GE Smart Signal, GP Strategies Eta Pro, GE Asset Performance Monitoring etc.

 

To support existing applications the Senior System Administrator effectively manages the resolution of production issues, adheres to all IT change management and incident reporting requirements, and verifies that applications are functioning properly after any change. Additional support activities include installing upgrades and patches and, when required, analyze, design, code, and implement changes to enhance functionality or to accommodate business process changes. When an application, underlying software infrastructure, or hardware has reached the end of its lifecycle the Senior System Administrator is tasked with identifying and implementing replacement solutions to meet business objectives.

 

As technology and the utility business changes so must the solutions implemented to ensure NYPA business needs. The impact of this role ensures the business runs more efficiently, enables the improvement of business processes, and provides more information for better management decision making.

Responsibilities

  • Provides the technical skills needed to implement, support, maintain, and improve hardware and software solutions.
  • Provide support and management of core Directory Services platforms (Active Directory, DNS, etc)
  • Perform operational management of key infrastructure platforms and services like M365, VMware, storage, Cloud (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
  • Assist in design and operations of DaaS and End-user services engineering 
  • Work cross-functionally with other teams and stakholders during incidents and changes while adhering to established ITSM protocols and processes. 
  • Ensure the performance and reliability of business systems through proactive monitoring.
  • Provide technical guidance to lower level staff. 
  • Monitor and maintain capacity and performance metrics for system features, recommend and take corrective/preventative actions.
  • Assist in the design and implementation of solutions. 
  • Proactive communications with appropriate IT staff and users on technology changes that will impact work processes.
  • Recommend, develop, and support continutious improvement of IT operations through tasks automation and scripting.
  • Ensure core infrastructure resiliency and support of  Business Continuity Processes and Disaster Recovery exercises

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Must be aware of changes and advancements in the industry and develop industry-wide expertise.
  • Technical knowledge of all phases of software implementation and support
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and oral communication across multiple IT teams. 
  • Competent to work at the highest technical level on all phases of system implementations and support
  • Demonstrated ability to provide high quality solutions based on comprehensive analysis. .
  • Persuasive with strong negotiating skills is also critical. 
  • Understanding of how NYPA interacts with outside organizations, including other utilities and regulatory agencies, and with its customers. Additionally, must be familiar with NYPA’s budgets, costs, and policies.
  • Demonstrated proficiency on the M365 platform and services, virtualization technologies, storage and compute, cloud platforms, and infrastructure services like Active Directory, DNS, etc.
  • Experience with scripting languages and automation tools 
     

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree required. IT related field preferred.
  • 4 years of related experience.
  • 2 years in an applications development and support environment. 
     

Physical Requirements

May be required to take trips to NYPA facilities to address issues. May be required to travel overnight to NYPA facilities. May be required to travel to NYPA’s hot-site as part of NYPA’s Disaster Recovery/Business Continuance Hot-Site procedures.

The salary offered will be determined based on the successful candidates’ relevant experience, knowledge, skills, and abilities.
