Sr Director Civil/Mechanical Engineering

Summary

The Senior Director Engineering provides technical leadership for the hydro, mechanical, transmission and civil/structural engineering disciplines, develops coordinated approaches to engineering solutions and drives technical design standards.

 

The Sr Director Infrastructure is accountable to the New York Power Authority (NYPA) for the successful execution of his/her responsibilities in furtherance of:

  • NYPA’s North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Reliability Standards Compliance program as set forth in Corporate Policies
    CP 10-4 and CP 2-9.
  • NYPA’s Asset Management Policy Company Policy CP 1 XX-X. 

 

The Sr Director Infrastructure is responsible for performing specific tasks identified in Business Unit Policies and Procedures that support Asset Management Policy Company Policy CP XX-X, Corporate Policies CP 10-4 and CP 2-9 and compliance with NERC Reliability Standards.  The Sr Director Infrastructure is identified in NYPA’s NERC Reliability Standards Compliance Responsibility Matrix established and managed pursuant to Utility Operations Business Unit policy O-TC-01-000 NERC and NPCC Reliability Standards Compliance Program and procedure O-TC-01-005 Compliance Responsibility.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership, motivation and collaboration critical for successful asset management and NERC Reliability Standards Compliance.
  • Drive the development of technical standards and designs for equipment, systems and structures.
  • Lead the technical planning and evaluation for the asset management lifecycle of mechanical, transmission, hydro and civil/structural assets.
  • Identify and recommend solutions to adapt team structure to meet NYPA’s changing needs.
  • Develop and maintain staff expertise in technical areas, create development opportunities within/ between disciplines and maintain depth at critical core competencies within Engineering.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Subject matter expertise in infrastructure requirements related to equipment, systems and structures.
  • Broad understanding of engineering & design for generation and transmission modifications and upgrades.
  • Ability to facilitate and drive collaboration among the Hydro, Mechanical, Transmission and Civil/Structural disciplines.
  • Broad understanding of project management principles and construction activities.
  • Broad understanding of equipment and infrastructure planning and asset lifecycle evaluation.
  • Strong project collaboration and effective communication skills.
  • Strong leadership ability and technical background to develop staff and maintain a highly skilled workforce.
  • Ability to respond and adapt to emergent and changing priorities.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, SAP, Maximo, and other platforms as required.

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering.
  • Master's degree or other advanced degree is preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in Engineering.
  • Direct people management experience in Engineering required.
  • Licensed as a Professional Engineer in NYS.
  • Utility experience preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to travel to all NYPA generation and transmission facilities.
  • Ability to travel to external technical resource locations (i.e. consultant, vendor, etc.).
