This internship with the NYPA Sustainability Team  is open to current SUNY Students who are interested in protecting  New York’s environment and supporting our transition to a carbon-free economy.

 

The New York Power Authority's (NYPA) Sustainability Team is dedicated to advancing environmental stewardship and promoting sustainable practices within the organization and for our customers. NYPA aims to use sustainable solutions to address business and operational challenges The internship program focuses on one of two main areas: biodiversity or climate resilience depending on the intern's interests. In terms of biodiversity, the program includes water quality improvement efforts, natural carbon storage initiatives, and biodiversity and habitat improvement programs. For climate resilience, the program covers climate-hazard exposure and vulnerability analysis, as well as long-term planning for the impacts of climate change on NYPA and Canals’ assets.

This internship requires a minimum of 20 hours per week, and ends in May 2026. Applications are due:November 21 to January 1.  

Responsibilities

  • Participate in department-specific projects, analysis, research methods and learn project management skills 
  • Support team in developing business solutions that contribute to NYPA’s VISION2030 strategic goals 
  • Research industry trends and emerging technologies to contribute to the continuous improvement of our programs 
  • Other projects as assigned; will vary based on focus area 
     

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs, especially Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills 
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to multi-task with competing priorities 
  • Ability to work both independently and collaborate as part of a team 
  • Provide positive customer service for internal and external stakeholders 
     

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Enrollment in an associate’s, undergraduate or graduate program at a SUNY college or university is required. Recent graduates are not eligible.  
  • Ecology, Environmental Science, Forestry, Environmental Engineering,Environmental/Public Policy, Environmental Studies 

  • Must be legally eligible to work in the United States for the duration of the internship.

The New York Power Authority is committed to providing fair, competitive, and market-informed compensation. The hourly rate for this position is based on the level of education at the time the intern program begins:

LEVEL HOURLY RATE
Sophomore $17.50
Junior $21.50
Senior (or May 2024 graduate) $21.50
Current graduate/law student $24.50
