Vice President, Commercial Electricity Supply

Summary

NYPA generates approximately 25% of the total electricity in New York State, with over 80% coming directly from our hydroelectric generation power plants.

 

The Commercial Operations business unit, which includes Clean Energy Solutions services, behind-the-meter innovative products, and generation resource management is seeking a Vice President of Electricity Supply to oversee its wholesale and retail electricity business.

 

The Vice President, Electricity Supply is a member of the leadership team of the New York Power Authority’s Commercial Operations division and provides overall leadership and management of the consolidated front office function of Energy Resource Management (ERM) and the origination & structuring as well as potential future management of customer load forecasting, tariff structuring and other existing and emerging commercial purchase power agreements. Additionally, this position may have a direct role in emergency preparedness, incident management or response and as such will require training in the National Incident Management System (NIMS). #LI-JP1

Responsibilities

  • In support of the mission of the Commercial Operations business unit to define and execute revenue and commercial strategy for NYPA, the VP, Electricity Supply will oversee and direct all department staff functions related to:
    1. Bidding NYPA generation and contractual units into the NYISO energy, ancillary service, and capacity markets to optimize benefits for NYPA and its customers.
    2. Development and implementation of fuel supply planning strategies and day-to-day fuel operations of NYPA’s fossil fuel plants in a cost effective, reliable manner.
    3. Development and implementation of strategies for hedging energy transactions to provide price and revenue stability and for the sale of emission credits.
    4. Planning and negotiating an economic and reliable supply portfolio for meeting customers’ needs.
    5. Enhancement, utilization and management of tracking systems and metrics, energy commodity risk management platforms as well as other analytics to monitor and evaluate forecasting, hedging, bidding, and gas purchasing performance as well as overall portfolio performance.
    6. Origination, structuring and marketing of a portfolio of innovative energy supply offerings incorporating the company’s existing hydro and thermal assets, wholesale market power as well as renewable projects to include wind, solar and energy storage that drives towards portfolio optimization, medium to long term financial viability and advancement of state energy policy.
    7. Development of supply offerings as well as the procurement of large-scale renewable power contracts to drive New York State towards a fully decarbonized electricity sector by 2040.
    8. Advisement on market and regulatory changes to support the preservation and enhancement of the existing portfolio’s value at various regulatory and market organizational forums.
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction for NYPA's focus on markets, products, services, and solutions. 
  • Represent NYPA and develop relationships with regional regulatory, government, institutional and business leaders.
  • Develop collaborative working relationships within the organization in pursuit of the overall business goals including with Financial Services, Enterprise Risk Management, Utility Operations, and Regulatory Affairs amongst others.
  • Advise company executives on matters pertaining to markets and customer activities. Ensure all functions under management are aligned and operating effectively to achieve the organization’s goals. 
  • Monitor regulatory environment for changes, e.g., FERC/NERC, RTO, etc., and recommends modifications or changes to organization policies consistent with regulatory changes.
  • Create and maintain a positive working environment and assist in the development of strategies to address workplace issues.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Extensive understanding of the energy industry including deregulated energy marketplace and competition.
  • Familiarity with NY energy policies and regulatory constructs, including the NY Clean Energy Standard.
  • Thorough understanding of the NYISO tariff and market operation rules and regulations for market design, system operations, generating facility operations and risk management principles.
  • Demonstrated wholesale market trading experience, and other regional transmission organization experience. 
  • Working knowledge of oil and natural gas management strategies.
  • Ability to understand engineering concepts related to operations and understand their implication in commercial transactions.
  • Strong leadership skills and an innovative, commercial mindset.
  • Effective communication style coupled with understanding of management principles and systems and how to motivate entire organizations to maximum potential.
  • Ability to influence by building and strengthening relationships with various key stakeholders. 
  • Understands the value of diversity and inclusion initiatives within the employee base and champions employee engagement at all levels.
  • Ability to coach, mentor and develop effective teams. 

Education, Experience and Certifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Science, Finance, Engineering,  Business or other relevant fields required.
  • Advanced degree in Business Administration or relevant field, preferred.
  • Minimum 10 years of related experience, with 7 years in the energy industry and wholesale electricity markets including trading, power purchase agreement development and negotiation; NYISO experience required; other RTO experience preferred.
  • Minimum 5 years of senior/executive leadership experience in energy markets preferred.
  • Experience leading large, diverse, teams of professionals and ensuring alignment with and execution of the department and organization’s goals. 

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to travel to NYPA locations throughout NYS (approximately 20%) and attend any in-state and out-of- state conferences or related business events.
